spray on coating

FAQ

Questions about spray coatings

Is spraying better than brushing?

Neither is better for every job. Spraying is faster on large or uneven surfaces and leaves an even film. Brushing gives more control on small areas and edges. See spray, brush or roll.

How thick should a spray coating be?

The product data sheet gives a target dry film thickness, usually in mils or microns. A wet film gauge used during spraying helps you hit it.

How much coating will I need?

It depends on the area, the thickness, the solids content and how much is lost as overspray. The coverage calculator gives a starting estimate.

How long before I can use the surface?

Cure times range from seconds for some polyureas to days for some epoxies, and they change with temperature and humidity. Follow the data sheet for foot traffic, vehicle traffic and full cure.

Can I spray a coating myself?

Many paints and roof coatings can be sprayed with rented airless equipment after some practice. Fast setting two part coatings need specialist rigs and training, so they are usually applied by trained crews.

What protective gear do I need?

At minimum, follow the safety data sheet. That often means a suitable respirator, eye protection, gloves and a suit, plus ventilation in enclosed spaces.

Why did my coating peel?

The usual causes are poor cleaning, no surface profile, moisture or spraying outside the temperature range. The surface preparation guide covers each one.

Do you sell coatings or equipment?

No. This is an information site. We do not sell products or recommend specific contractors.
