spray on coating

Estimate

Coverage calculator

A quick estimate of how much coating to order. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Check the result against the product data sheet.

Method

How the estimate works

One US gallon of liquid spread one mil thick covers about 1,604 square feet. A coating that is only part solids leaves a thinner dry film, and some material is lost to overspray, so the calculator divides by both. Multiply by the number of coats and you have a starting figure.

gallons = area × mils × coats ÷ (1,604 × solids × transfer)

  • Use the solids by volume figure from the product data sheet.
  • Rough or porous surfaces soak up more than smooth ones.
  • Add a margin for waste, touch ups and the material left in hoses.
  • For two part coatings, split the total by the mix ratio.

For thickness targets, see the coating types guide. For losses and tip sizes, see spray equipment.
